How Often Should You Have a Dental Check-up?

28 Jul 2025

Regular dental check-ups help you stay ahead of problems rather than waiting for pain. They give your dentist the opportunity to assess your teeth, gums, bite and existing dental work, carry out an oral cancer screening, and recommend care based on your individual risk.

In this guide

The short answer: not everybody needs a dental check-up every six months. Your recommended interval should reflect the health of your teeth and gums and your risk of developing future problems.

How often should you have a dental check-up?

For adults, the recommended time between routine oral health reviews can range from around three months to two years. Someone with healthy teeth and gums may be advised to attend less frequently, while patients with active gum disease, a higher decay risk, complex dental work or other concerns may need closer monitoring.

Your dentist will recommend a recall interval after assessing your oral health. If you develop pain, swelling, bleeding gums, a broken tooth or another concern between routine visits, do not wait for your next check-up.

What happens during a dental check-up?

A check-up is more than a quick look for cavities. At The Smile Designers, your examination may include:

  • Assessing your teeth for decay, cracks, wear and other changes
  • Checking your gums for signs of inflammation or gum disease
  • Reviewing crowns, fillings, bridges, implants and other dental work
  • Examining your bite and discussing jaw or tooth-wear symptoms
  • Completing an oral cancer screening
  • Discussing your medical history, medication and any concerns
  • Taking X-rays when clinically necessary
  • Agreeing a personalised prevention and recall plan

Why regular dental examinations matter

Problems do not always hurt at first

Early tooth decay, gum disease and failing dental work can develop without obvious symptoms. Finding changes sooner may make treatment simpler and help protect more of the natural tooth.

Your gums need attention too

Bleeding gums are common, but they should not be ignored. Your dentist can assess your gum health and, where appropriate, recommend tailored home care or a professional dental hygiene clean.

Your mouth is checked for more than tooth decay

A routine examination also includes the soft tissues of the mouth. If you have an ulcer, lump, red or white patch, or another change that has not healed within three weeks, arrange an assessment rather than waiting for your usual recall.

Existing dentistry can be monitored

Fillings, crowns, bridges, implants and cosmetic dentistry all benefit from ongoing review. Regular monitoring helps identify wear, gum changes or maintenance needs before they become larger problems.

How to protect your teeth between appointments

  • Brush twice daily for around two minutes using fluoride toothpaste
  • Spit after brushing and avoid rinsing immediately
  • Clean between your teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes
  • Keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes where possible
  • Avoid smoking and tell your dentist about any changes to your health
  • Attend hygiene appointments at the interval recommended for you

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a check-up if nothing hurts?

Yes. Many dental and gum problems produce few or no symptoms in their early stages. A routine examination is intended to identify risk and changes before they become urgent.

Will I need X-rays at every appointment?

No. Dental X-rays should be taken only when clinically justified. The type and frequency depend on your symptoms, history, previous images and individual risk.

Is a check-up the same as a hygiene appointment?

No. A dentist examines and diagnoses the health of your mouth. A hygienist focuses on gum health, professional cleaning and personalised prevention. Many patients benefit from both, but the recommended frequency can differ.

How much is a private dental check-up in Sheffield?

A private dental check-up at The Smile Designers is currently £60. It includes a full clinical examination, oral cancer screening and time to discuss your concerns. Any clinically required X-rays or additional investigations will be explained separately.
