Real dental implant case studies
Single dental implant: replacing a missing back tooth
This gentleman travelled from Leeds to our Sheffield dental practice because he wanted a fixed, natural-looking replacement for a missing lower back tooth.
The missing tooth was his lower pre-molar one of the most commonly extracted teeth and an important tooth for comfortable chewing and supporting the bite. He wanted to eat normally on both sides again without damaging or preparing the healthy teeth next to the gap.
Using our PRISM System, we digitally planned the position of the final implant crown before placing the implant. Because he had suitable bone and gum conditions, we were able to place his single dental implant using a minimally invasive keyhole technique.
This meant the implant could be placed through a small opening in the gum without raising a larger gum flap. He reported no pain during the procedure, and the implant placement was completed in 20 minutes.
The result was a secure, fixed back tooth designed to help him:

✔ Rely on a tooth that does not move while eating or speaking
One missing tooth may seem like a small problem. But when it affects how you eat every day, replacing it properly can make a significant difference.
Implant bridges: replacing multiple missing back teeth
Jane had lost all of her back teeth, leaving her with very limited support for chewing. She wanted fixed teeth that would help her eat more comfortably without relying on removable dentures.
Her treatment required particularly careful planning because she had a history of gum disease and smoked—both of which can increase the risks associated with dental implants and affect their long-term success.
Using our PRISM System, we planned two separate implant-supported bridges to replace the missing back teeth and rebuild support on both sides of her mouth.
The implants were positioned around the final bridges we wanted to create, allowing us to plan fixed teeth designed to distribute chewing forces more evenly and work alongside her remaining natural teeth.
The result was two secure implant bridges designed to help her:

Full-arch dental implants: rebuilding Marie’s complete smile
Marie came to us with severely compromised upper teeth that could no longer be predictably restored. Years of dental problems had affected how confidently she could smile and eat.
Using our PRISM System, we started by digitally designing Marie’s final smile. This allowed us to plan the shape, position and appearance of her new teeth before deciding exactly where the supporting implants should be placed.
Her unrestorable teeth were removed and five carefully positioned dental implants were used to support a full set of teeth. Sometimes referred to as full-arch implants or All-on-X treatment, this approach replaces an entire row of failing or missing teeth.

Does getting a dental implant hurt?
This is one of the most common questions we’re asked.
All of our implant procedures are comfortably carried out using local anaesthetic, meaning you shouldn’t feel pain during treatment. Many patients tell us afterwards they were surprised by how straightforward the procedure felt.
Some tenderness or swelling afterwards is normal and part of the healing process, and we’ll explain exactly what to expect and how to manage comfortably before you leave.
How much does a dental implant cost?
The Smile Designers Sheffield dental implants are typically paid in two parts: £1,500 for the implant placement and £1,500 for the custom-made ceramic crown that fits on top (usually around 12 weeks later). We also offer finance options, so treatment can be spread over a period of up to 5 years.

Treatment overseas can sometimes appear cheaper, but it is important to compare what is included, who will provide your follow-up care and whether enough time has been allowed for assessment, planning and healing. Some implant treatments can be completed quickly in suitable cases, while others are safer when carried out in stages over several months. Can you get dental implants with gum disease?
If you have active gum disease, we’ll need to treat that first. Healthy gums and strong bone support are essential for long-term implant success, but having a history of gum problems doesn’t automatically rule you out. We’ll assess your case and let you know what’s possible.
What are dental implants made of?
Our dental implants are made from medical-grade titanium, which bonds naturally to the jawbone and is highly biocompatible. The visible part of the implant (the crown) is made from ceramic to match the colour, shape and sheen of your natural teeth.
Can you have teeth implants with receding gums?
Possibly—it depends on the extent of the recession. In some cases, dental implants can still be placed safely. In others, we may recommend gum or bone grafting first to improve support. We’ll assess your gum health thoroughly before recommending a plan.
What is the healing time for dental implants?
It varies. Some patients feel ready to return to work in 2–3 days, while others take a little longer. Behind the scenes, the implant is slowly bonding with your jawbone, a process called osseointegration, which usually takes a few months. Smoking during this time can increase the risk of failure, so we’ll give you aftercare guidance to help prevent any issues.

What is the Keyhole Implant Method?
For suitable patients, we may be able to place implants through a very small opening in the gum. Around 5mm.
Because much of the work is completed during the planning stage, this technique may reduce tissue disruption and lead to a more comfortable recovery for suitable cases.
Not every patient is suitable, and we’ll always recommend the technique we believe offers the safest and most predictable long-term outcome.
I have been told I don't have enough bone
Not having enough bone doesn’t automatically rule out implant treatment.
Depending on your individual case, we may discuss bone grafting, alternative implant positions or different treatment options.
Your digital scan and 3D CBCT imaging allow us to assess this accurately before treatment begins.
